Most of Wimpole Street, Upper Wimpole Street and Devonshire Place was built up by 1793.

In the mid-eighteenth century the hub of medical science and practice was in the City. The growth of affluent residential housing northwards from Mayfair and westwards from Bloomsbury combined with its proximity to the important shops on Regent Bond and Oxford Street naturally created a newly fashionable area around Cavendish Square.

The most famous resident in Wimpole Street was the poet Elizabeth Barrett, who lived at 50 Wimpole Street with her family from 1838 until 1846 when she eloped with Robert Browning.

Wimpole Street has been home to a few modern day celebrities, such as Paul McCartney who lived at 57 Wimpole Street in 1964-1966 during his relationship with Jane Asher.
